The lecture in August 7 mentioned “Gender and sexuality” and Dr. Kingan listed Performativity, Reproduction, Compensation, Legislation, Intersectionality as key concepts. In early America, masculine was defined as strong, protective independent, militaristic, aggressive. Meanwhile, feminine was defined as weak, dependent, helpless, emotional, nurturing and women suffered discrimination for a long time. However, in 1848, Seneca Falls asked for end of discrimination against women and women served on grand jury in 1870. Also, women earned right to vote in 1920 and right to equal education in 1972. As time passed, treatment of women was gradually improved. However, in America, treatment of sexual orientation is complicated. LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) community mixes up two separate concepts: sexual orientation and gender identity. The former president, Obama made same-sex marriage legal in 2015. However, the president, Trump banned transgender from military and it appeared that a tendency to discriminate LGBT become strong now.
The lecture in August 8 mentioned “Race relations in the USA”. Early 1600s, English people come to the USA to colonize, they were not deeply racist and most workers were white until late 1600s. After a while, most blacks were enslaved and most plantation labor was done by them. This was when the USA changed to a skin color based society. Some black people resist the terrible treatment of them. For example, Frederick Douglass and John Brown tried to start a war against slavery. After the civil war, the treatment of black people was a little improved. New Deal proposed by Franklin Roosevelt bring black people better living standards. Also, U.S.court decided separating black and white schools were illegal in 1954. However, the treatment of black people became worse again. For example, Ku Klux Klan killed black people or white people who worked with black people. Also, Rosa Park s arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus.
I think the prejudice of transgender and the racism will continue intermittently from now on. History repeats itself, but I believe these discriminations toward certain people will be better gradually in the future.
